Career:

Darren began his costs career in 1991 within a firm of solicitors in Bromley, Kent where he dealt with Legal Aid and private client costs claims in family and personal injury matters, and claims for costs in RTA claims on behalf of insurers. Since then, Darren has worked at an independent costs agency and a number of firms of solicitors including Wallace LLP (then Wallace & Partners); Hamlins LLP (including a stint as a case handler in the Mortgage Repossessions Team) and; worked for over 10 years at international law firm Clyde & Co LLP during which time, Darren dealt with various high value costs claims including those concerning shipping disputes, insurance/reinsurance claims, Solicitors Act disputes, medical negligence and other professional negligence claims and catastrophic injury claims.

More recently Darren spent 6 years at boutique law firm, Joseph Hage Aaronson LLP (JHA) in High Holborn, dealing with claims for costs against HMRC in respect of some of the largest and most complex tax group litigation claims, including ‘Test Claimants in the CFC and Dividend Group Litigation v HMRC’ and ‘Test Claimants in the Franked Investment Income (FII) Group Litigation v HMRC’ that included claims for costs in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court and references to the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Other matters included claims for costs in the General Court of the CJEU, white collar criminal matters, judicial review proceedings, medical negligence and catastrophic injury claims and other complex and high value litigation and arbitration claims for high worth individuals and corporations.

At JHA, Darren set up and managed a small team of costs lawyers, establishing a new costs practice area for the firm and extending the Costs Team’s service offering to external ‘costs only’ clients. During his time at Clyde & Co and JHA, Darren had also been responsible for advising on funding issues, including drafting the firms’ Conditional Fee Agreements and Damages Based Agreements and assisting in funding due diligence exercises.

In August 2020, Darren finally decided to set up his own costs consultancy from his office in Welling, offering competitive rates for commercial legal costs advice and representation through Salliss Law Costs Consultancy Limited.

Outside of costs:

In between the odd fly fishing trip and trying to teach himself piano, Darren enjoys spending time with his family. He is also looking forward to touring the UK and seeing more of the French country and coast in the family’s campervan.
